Once, a clever fox met a fierce tiger. The tiger showed his sharp teeth and stretched out his claws, ready to eat the fox. But the smart fox quickly said, "Oh, strong tiger, don’t think you’re the only one who is brave. I am just as brave as you—maybe even braver! Let’s take a walk together. You walk behind me, and if people see me and aren’t afraid, then you can eat me."
The tiger thought this was a good plan and agreed. The fox began walking down a big road, with the tiger right behind him. As soon as the people on the road saw the tiger, they got very scared. They didn’t even look at the fox—they were too frightened by the tiger. In a hurry, they all ran away.
The fox looked back at the tiger and said, "See? I walked in front of you, and the people were afraid as soon as they saw me."
The tiger believed the fox’s words. He put his tail between his legs and ran away. What the tiger didn’t know was that the people were not afraid of the fox, but of the strong tiger behind him. The fox had used the fear that the tiger caused.
Once upon a time, a clever fox was trotting along, minding his own business, when he bumped straight into a very large, very hungry tiger. The tiger stretched out his claws, flashed a toothy grin, and looked at the fox as if he were a tasty snack.
“Ohhh, you look delicious,” the tiger said, licking his chops.
The fox raised a paw, looking completely unimpressed. “Whoa there, big fella! Let’s not be hasty. Have you really thought this through?”
The tiger tilted his head. “Uh...thought what through?”
“Well,” the fox said, glancing at his own reflection in a puddle and brushing his tail, “I am actually quite brave, maybe even braver than you. And that’s a big deal because I’m very brave.” He puffed up his chest dramatically. “People fear me. They tremble in my presence!”
The tiger blinked. “You’re a fox. You’re small and fuzzy.”
“Fuzzy?” The fox gasped as if he’d been insulted. “I’ll have you know, I strike fear into the hearts of all who see me! In fact, if you follow me down this road here, you’ll see how everyone scurries off in terror. Go on, follow me! If no one’s scared, then fine—you can eat me.”
The tiger scratched his head, but he was curious now. “All right, little fuzzy fox,” he said with a chuckle, “lead the way.”
So the fox trotted down the road, and the tiger lumbered along right behind him, each of his paws thumping like a big, furry drum. The fox strutted down the path like he owned the place, tossing his head as if he were the star of the show.
They hadn’t gone far when a few travelers spotted the tiger’s massive form behind the fox. Their eyes went wide, and they gasped, “Aaah! A tiger!” And before you could say “whiskers and claws,” they dashed off the road and vanished into the trees.
The fox looked over his shoulder, winking at the tiger. “Did you see that? They took one look at me, and poof! Gone! Terrified.”
The tiger frowned, but he could see the people running away. “Well… I guess you do have a certain…uh, charm?”
“Oh, charm doesn’t even cover it,” the fox said with a grin. “I’m practically legendary. Watch this.” And he strutted along even more confidently.
More people spotted them coming and gasped, “It’s a tiger! Run!” They didn’t give the fox a single glance as they darted away, too scared to even look back.
The tiger’s eyes grew wide with amazement. “I can’t believe this,” he muttered. “They’re really… scared of you?”
“Yup, that’s the power of the fox,” the fox said, casually buffing his claws on his chest. “Not everyone has it, you know.”
The tiger, thoroughly convinced by now, gave the fox a respectful nod. “Well, I wouldn’t want to mess with someone that powerful.” And with a hasty bow, he tucked his tail and dashed off into the woods, leaving the fox alone on the path.
The fox watched him go and chuckled to himself. “What can I say?” he muttered under his breath, “It’s all in the presentation.” Then he swished his tail and continued his stroll, thoroughly pleased with his cleverness.
Once there was a clever fox,
With fur as bright as polished rocks.
One day, he met a tiger strong,
With sharp, sharp teeth and claws so long.
The tiger growled, “I’ll make you stew!”
The fox just grinned and said, “Not you!
I’m brave as you, and fierce as well—
Let’s take a walk, I’ll lead, you’ll tell.”
So off they went, down paths so wide,
The fox ahead, the tiger beside.
And all who saw the tiger’s might
Ran off in fear, ran out of sight!
But none took note of little Fox,
They only feared the tiger’s knocks.
The fox then grinned and turned to say,
“See? They’re scared of me today!”
The tiger paused and scratched his head,
“Perhaps it’s true, what Fox has said.”
So with his tail tucked low and tight,
The tiger fled right out of sight.
The fox had borrowed Tiger’s might,
To give himself a fiercer sight.
With clever words and cunning grin,
The sly old fox had won again!
