Jataka Tales - The Three Fishes
Audio available for B1 version

There was a time when three fish friends lived in a far-off river. Their names were Thoughtful, Very-Thoughtful, and Thoughtless. One day, they decided to leave their calm home and swim towards a busy town nearby.

Very-Thoughtful was worried. He told his friends, "This place isn't safe. There are fishermen here who can catch us. We should go back to our safe and quiet home."

But Thoughtful and Thoughtless were too lazy to swim back. They also enjoyed the easy food they found near the town. They kept saying, "We'll go back tomorrow." But they never did.

Then one day, while Thoughtful and Thoughtless were swimming ahead of Very-Thoughtful, they went straight into a fisherman's net. They didn't see the net and got trapped!

Very-Thoughtful saw what happened. He thought, "I need to help them." He had a smart plan. He swam around the net, first at the front and then at the back. He splashed the water like a fish who had escaped the net.

The fisherman saw this. He thought the fish had escaped his net and swam away. So, he pulled one corner of his net to check. This made a gap in the net, and Thoughtful and Thoughtless swam out and escaped.

When they were safe, they thanked Very-Thoughtful. They said, "You saved us, Very-Thoughtful, we now understand the value of your advice. Let's return to our safe home in the wild."

So, all three fish swam back to their old, quiet home. They were happy and safe again. From then on, they remembered this lesson and stayed far away from danger.

Once upon a time, there were these three fish buddies. Their names were Thoughtful, Very-Thoughtful, and Thoughtless. Yeah, it's like their parents wanted them to always remember their personality homework or something.

One sunny day, they thought, "Let's go on an adventure!" and swam towards a bustling town. Lots of people, lots of noise, and oh boy, lots of food crumbs!

Very-Thoughtful flapped his fins and said, "Um, guys? This place is like a fishy game of 'Tag,' but we're always 'it.' Fishermen everywhere! Maybe we should go home?"

Thoughtful and Thoughtless giggled and said, "Aw, come on! Look at all this yummy food! We’ll go home later, promise!"

Well, you know what happened next? Yup, they swam right into a big ol' net! Very-Thoughtful was like, "Oh, fishsticks! Time for some sneaky moves!" He started splashing around the net like he was dancing at a fishy disco. The fisherman saw this and thought, "Huh? Did they all escape?" So he lifted one corner of the net to check. That made just enough of a hole for Thoughtful and Thoughtless to zoom out!

Once they were free, Thoughtful said, "Wow, Very-Thoughtful, you're like a fishy superhero!"

"And you've got a super-fin!" added Thoughtless, suddenly not so thoughtless anymore.

Very-Thoughtful just smiled and said, "Alright, heroes and sidekicks, let's swim back to our quiet home. Less food maybe, but also less nets!"

So they swam back to their peaceful river home, as happy as clams—or, you know, fish. And from then on, they stayed away from anything that smelled like danger—or fishermen!

And they all swam happily ever after.

Three fishy pals in waters wide—
Thoughtful, Very-Thoughtful, Thoughtless side by side.
They swam away from quiet stream,
To seek the town, a daring dream.

"Careful, friends!" said Very-Thoughtful with a frown,
"Fishermen roam in this bustling town.
Let's make a splash and dash right back,
To our peaceful home, off this risky track."

Thoughtful and Thoughtless liked their stay,
Eating easy snacks both night and day.
"We'll swim back home tomorrow, you'll see,"
But tomorrow never came, as oft it can be.

Until one sunny, dreadful day,
A fisherman's net blocked their way.
Caught in the mesh, their freedom ceased,
Thoughtful and Thoughtless almost got fleeced.

But Very-Thoughtful, ever so wise,
Formed a clever, quick disguise.
Splashing here and splashing there,
As if the net were empty, clear as air.

The fisherman, fooled by the sight,
Loosened the net with all his might.
Thoughtful and Thoughtless, quick as a flash,
Slipped through the gap, avoided the crash.

Back with their friend, both safe and sound,
They thanked Very-Thoughtful, their wisdom profound.
"You saved our scales, your counsel's gold,
Let's head to our home, just as we're told."

So, off they swam, tails wagging with glee,
Back to their home, as safe as can be.
The lesson well-learned, etched in their fins,
Keep close to your home, that's where safety begins.
