Why the Tiger and the Stag Fear Each Other
Audio available for B1 version

Once upon a time, there was a proud stag with long, branching antlers. One day, he thought, "I'm tired of wandering around. I want to build my own house." So, he searched high and low, in valleys, by streams, and under trees, until he found the perfect spot. It wasn't too high or too low, not too close to the stream, and not too far from the trees. "This is the place!" he said, and began clearing the land.

In the same land, there lived a large tiger with sharp teeth and fierce eyes. The tiger also decided, "I’m tired of not having a home. I’ll build my own house." He too searched everywhere until he found the same perfect spot. "This place is already partly cleared," the tiger thought, and started working.

The next morning, the stag returned and saw the land more cleared than before. "Someone is helping me!" he thought, and continued building the foundation. That night, the tiger came back and noticed the foundation laid. "Someone is helping me too!" he said, and worked all night building the walls and a little window.

When the stag returned the next morning, he was surprised to see the walls and window completed. "My helper is doing great work!" he said, and added the roof. By nightfall, the house was finished, and the stag slept peacefully inside.

But that night, the tiger came back. He saw the roof and muttered, "Wow, my helper works fast!" Then, to his shock, he found the stag asleep in the corner. "Who are you, and what are you doing in my house?" growled the tiger.

The stag woke up and said, "Your house? This is my house!"

They argued all night about who built the house. In the end, they agreed to share it.

The next night, the tiger told the stag, "I’m going hunting. Get the water and wood ready for the fire." The stag did as asked, but when the tiger returned, he brought a stag for dinner. Feeling uneasy, the stag didn't eat and couldn't sleep that night.

The next day, the stag went hunting and told the tiger to prepare water and wood. When the stag returned, he brought back a large tiger. The tiger lost his appetite and spent the night wide awake, afraid.

Neither the tiger nor the stag could sleep that night, both scared the other might attack. Suddenly, the stag's horns bumped the roof, making a loud noise. The tiger, thinking the stag was about to strike, dashed out of the house. At the same time, the stag thought the tiger was attacking and ran in the opposite direction.

They ran and ran, scared of each other, and never returned to the house.

And so, the house with the grass roof waited and waited. But since no one returned, it eventually crumbled and fell to the ground.

Once upon a time, there was a stag with antlers so big and twisty, they looked like the world's most confusing spaghetti. One day, as he admired his reflection in a pond, he thought, "You know what? I'm done wandering around like a lost sock. I need a house. A proper house!" And so, he trotted off to find the perfect spot—somewhere cozy, somewhere nice, somewhere where his antlers wouldn’t get stuck in the doorframe.

After searching high and low, under trees, over hills, and through way too many bushes (which he wasn't thrilled about), he finally found it. "Ah! This is the place! Not too high, not too low. And look, close to the stream but not so close that I’ll wake up soggy!" So, the stag began clearing the land, humming a little tune to himself, something like, "I’m gonna build me a house, yes I am, yes I am…"

But in the same forest, there lived a tiger—a fierce tiger with teeth so sharp they could open cans, if tigers ate canned food, which they don’t. The tiger, also fed up with roaming around like a traveling circus act, said to himself, "That’s it! I’m getting my own place. Somewhere with good lighting for my stripes, and maybe a snack bar." And off he went, searching everywhere until he stumbled upon the exact same spot the stag had chosen.

"Well, well, well," said the tiger, twirling his whiskers, "this place is already cleared! Perfect. Less work for me!" And with a smirk, he started building.

The next morning, the stag returned, antlers gleaming in the sun, and blinked at what he saw. The land was even more cleared than before. "Would you look at that! Someone’s helping me! Maybe it's one of those woodland contractors. Probably a beaver. Beavers are always up for a good project." Pleased with his "helper," he laid the foundation, humming a new tune, "Teamwork makes the dream work, oh yeah!"

That night, the tiger came back and was surprised to see the foundation already done. "Ha! My mystery helper strikes again!" He rubbed his paws together. "Whoever you are, keep it up! Maybe they’ll paint the place too." So, he worked all night, building up the walls and adding a window—because every tiger loves a room with a view.

The next morning, the stag returned and found the walls and window in place. "Wow, this helper is amazing! I bet it’s one of those super squirrels—always zipping around, getting things done." Feeling inspired, the stag added the roof, humming yet another tune, "My house is looking fine, oh yeah, oh yeah!"

But that night, when the tiger returned, he found the roof finished. "Whoa! My helper is lightning fast! They deserve a snack." But when he peeked inside, ready to celebrate with his mystery friend, he found the stag snoozing in the corner, snoring loudly, and possibly dreaming of really big salads.

"Hey! Who are you, and why are you sleeping in MY house?!" growled the tiger, his tail twitching in surprise.

The stag woke up, blinking sleepily. "Your house? This is my house!"

They argued back and forth for hours. "My house!" "No, MY house!" It went on like that until they finally gave up and said, "Fine, fine, we’ll share it. But I’m putting my antlers on the wall. Just saying."

The next day, the tiger decided to go hunting and told the stag, "Listen, I’m heading out to catch dinner. You handle the water and wood for the fire. We’ll feast like kings tonight!" Off he went, swaggering through the forest like he owned the place—which, technically, he thought he did.

The stag, being the helpful sort, did as asked, but when the tiger came back… well, let’s just say he had a very uncomfortable moment. The tiger had brought back a stag for dinner. Yes, a stag.

The stag’s eyes went wide. "Umm, we need to talk about your meal choices, buddy."

The tiger, oblivious to the awkwardness, chomped away happily, but the stag… yeah, he wasn't eating that night. "I think I’ll just stick to some berries," he muttered, pretending not to notice the "other stag" situation.

The next day, it was the stag’s turn to go hunting. "Right, your turn to get the water and wood!" he said, off he went, determined to one-up the tiger. Hours later, the stag returned with… a tiger! Yes, a tiger.

The tiger’s jaw dropped. "Uhh… that’s a tiger. That’s me. You brought back ME for dinner!"

The stag, trying to play it cool, said, "Oh, did I? What are the odds, right? Heh…"

Both of them suddenly lost their appetite. They spent the night lying wide awake, side-eyeing each other, both too nervous to sleep. The stag's horns accidentally bumped the roof, making a loud BANG!

"Attack!" shouted the tiger, leaping out of the house like his tail was on fire.

"Ambush!" yelled the stag, bolting in the opposite direction, antlers flailing like a runaway tree.

And that was the end of that. They ran and ran, each convinced the other was out to get them, and neither one ever returned to the house.

As for the house? Well, it sat there quietly, waiting for someone to return. But since no one did, it eventually fell apart—like a cake left out in the rain.

And so, the stag and the tiger lived… elsewhere. But at least they both got a good story out of it!

In the woods, a stag once stood,
His antlers twisty, tall, and good.
He peered into the pond so clear,
And thought, "I need a home right here!"

Away he trotted, searching wide,
For a cozy place to hide.
“Not too high, not too low,
Somewhere safe from rain and snow.”

But nearby, fierce Tiger growled,
“I’m tired of wandering all around!”
He wanted a house, a place to rest,
With room for snacks and a window, best!

They both found the same sweet spot,
Each unaware of what they’d got.
Stag saw the land was cleared with care,
“Who helped me here? How kind and fair!”

Tiger returned that very night,
“Walls up! My helper’s a delight!”
The two kept building, side by side,
Neither knew what the other had spied.

By morning, Stag saw the roof was done,
“Wow, super squirrels work fast and fun!”
Tiger smiled, “My house is grand!
I'll finish this with my own hand.”

But when they met, oh what a shock!
“This is MY house,” they both did balk.
“My walls, my roof, my lovely floor!”
“No, it's mine, I built it more!”

Finally, they sighed and said, "Okay,
We'll share this house, both night and day."
Tiger went hunting, proud and strong,
But what he brought home was all wrong!

A stag for dinner? Oh, dear me!
Stag gasped, "That's too close, you see."
Next day, the stag went out to hunt,
And brought back a tiger with a grunt!

Both were startled, eyes open wide,
“I think we’ll stick to plants," they sighed.
The house sat still as they both ran,
And thus, it crumbled back to sand.
