Once there was a donkey who had worked for many years carrying corn to the mill. He was getting old and weak, so his master wanted to get rid of him. The donkey realized this and decided to run away to Bremen, where he thought he could become a town musician.

As he walked, the donkey met a hound lying on the road, panting heavily. The donkey asked, "Why are you panting so hard, big fellow?" The hound replied, "I'm old and weak. I can't hunt anymore, so my master wanted to kill me. I ran away, but now I don't know how to survive." The donkey said, "Come with me to Bremen. We can be musicians together. I will play the lute, and you can beat the drum." The hound agreed, and they continued on their way.

Next, they found a cat sitting by the path, looking very sad. "What's wrong, old shaver?" asked the donkey. The cat replied, "I'm getting old, and my teeth are worn out. I prefer to sit by the fire rather than hunt mice. My mistress wanted to drown me, so I ran away. But now, I don't know where to go." The donkey invited the cat to join them in Bremen as a town musician. The cat agreed, and they went on together.

After a while, they came to a farmyard where a rooster was crowing loudly. "Why are you crowing so loudly?" asked the donkey. The rooster replied, "I'm crowing because tomorrow is Sunday, and the housewife wants to cook me in the soup. Tonight, she plans to cut off my head." The donkey said, "Come with us to Bremen. You have a good voice, and we can all make music together." The rooster agreed, and they all set off together.

They couldn't reach Bremen in one day, so they stopped to rest in a forest. The donkey and the hound lay down under a tree, the cat climbed up the tree, and the rooster flew to the top. Before falling asleep, the rooster saw a light in the distance and told his friends. The donkey suggested they go to the house where the light was for better shelter.

When they reached the house, they saw it was a well-lit robbers' house. The donkey looked in through the window and saw a table full of food and drink with robbers sitting around it. The animals decided to scare the robbers away. The donkey stood on the window ledge, the hound climbed on the donkey's back, the cat stood on the hound, and the rooster perched on the cat's head. At a signal, they all made loud noises: the donkey brayed, the hound barked, the cat meowed, and the rooster crowed. They burst through the window, shattering the glass. The robbers, terrified by the noise, ran away into the forest.

The animals sat at the table, ate the food, and then found places to sleep. The donkey lay on some straw in the yard, the hound behind the door, the cat on the hearth near the warm ashes, and the rooster perched on a beam of the roof. They soon fell asleep.

After midnight, the robbers saw the house was dark and quiet, so their captain sent one to check. The robber entered the kitchen to light a candle, but mistook the cat's glowing eyes for live coals. He tried to light a match, and the cat scratched his face. The robber ran to the back door, where the hound bit his leg. As he ran across the yard, the donkey kicked him, and the rooster crowed from the roof.

The robber ran back to his captain, terrified, and told him about the horrible witch, the man with a knife, the black monster, and the judge on the roof. The robbers never dared to return to the house, and the four animals lived happily there for the rest of their days.

They reach the house. It is a thieves' house. The donkey looks in the window. He sees food and drink. The thieves are eating.

The donkey has an idea. He says, "Let's scare the thieves away." The donkey stands by the window. The dog climbs on the donkey's back. The cat stands on the dog. The rooster stands on the cat's head.

They all make loud noises. The donkey brays. The dog barks. The cat meows. The rooster crows. The thieves are scared. They run away.

The animals go into the house. They eat the food. They find places to sleep. The donkey lies in the yard. The dog lies behind the door. The cat lies by the fire. The rooster lies on the roof.

The thieves want to come back. One thief goes into the house. He sees the cat's eyes. He thinks they are coals. He tries to light a match. The cat scratches him. The thief runs. The dog bites him. The donkey kicks him. The rooster crows.

The thief runs away. He tells his friends about the animals. The thieves never come back. The donkey, the dog, the cat, and the rooster live happily in the house.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there was a donkey who had worked hard for many years, carrying corn to the mill. But now, the donkey was getting old and feeling a bit like a smartphone with a cracked screen—still functional, but not exactly top-notch. His master, a grumpy old man who had no appreciation for vintage charm, decided it was time to get rid of the poor donkey.

Realizing this, the donkey thought, "Oh, no, you don't!" and decided to run away to Bremen, where he believed he could become a town musician. "Bremen's got to be better than this place," he muttered to himself, setting off with a determined clip-clop.

As he trotted along, the donkey met a hound lying on the road, panting heavily as if he’d just run a marathon while carrying groceries. "Hey there, big fellow," said the donkey. "Why are you panting like you just saw a cat in a dog show?"

The hound replied, "I'm old and weak. I can't hunt anymore, so my master wanted to send me away. I ran off, but now I’m more lost than a sock in a laundry room."

"Come with me to Bremen," said the donkey. "We can be musicians together. I'll play the lute, and you can beat the drum. Or maybe just beatbox. Whatever works."

The hound's eyes lit up. "Beats wandering around alone," he said, and they continued on their way.

Next, they found a cat sitting by the path, looking very sad and more downcast than a rain-soaked kitten. "What's wrong, old shaver?" asked the donkey.

The cat sighed dramatically. "I'm getting old, and my teeth are worn out. I'd rather sit by the fire than chase mice. My mistress wanted to send me away, so I ran off. Now, I feel like a fish out of water... only, you know, not wet."

"Come with us to Bremen," said the donkey. "You can join our band. We could use some feline finesse. Plus, I hear cats are great at jazz."

The cat perked up. "Jazz, you say? I can totally dig that. Count me in!" And off they went.

After a while, they came to a farmyard where a rooster was crowing loudly, sounding more like a broken alarm clock than a proud bird. "Why are you crowing so loudly?" asked the donkey.

The rooster replied, "I'm crowing because tomorrow is Sunday, and the housewife wants to put me in the soup. Tonight, she plans to cook me."

"Come with us to Bremen," said the donkey. "You've got a voice that could wake up the whole town. We could use you in our band."

The rooster fluffed his feathers. "A chance to be a star? How can I resist? Let’s do this!" And they all set off together.

They couldn't reach Bremen in one day, so they decided to camp out in a forest. The donkey and the hound lay down under a tree, the cat climbed up the tree, and the rooster flew to the top. Before they fell asleep, the rooster spotted a light in the distance and told his friends.

The donkey suggested they go to the house where the light was for better shelter. When they reached the house, they saw it was a well-lit robbers' house. The donkey peeked through the window and saw a table full of food and drink with robbers sitting around it.

"Alright, team," whispered the donkey, "Let's give these robbers the scare of their lives. On my signal, we make some noise. Ready?"

The animals got into position: the donkey stood on the window ledge, the hound climbed on the donkey's back, the cat stood on the hound, and the rooster perched on the cat's head. At the donkey's signal, they all let out a cacophony of sounds: the donkey brayed, the hound barked, the cat meowed, and the rooster crowed. They burst through the window, shattering the glass. The robbers, terrified by the sudden ruckus, ran away into the forest like they'd seen a ghost—or four.

The animals sat at the table, enjoying the feast like they were at a medieval banquet. They then found places to sleep: the donkey lay on some straw in the yard, the hound behind the door, the cat on the hearth near the warm ashes, and the rooster perched on a beam of the roof. They soon fell asleep, dreaming of their future musical careers.

After midnight, the robbers saw the house was dark and quiet, so their captain sent one to check. The robber entered the kitchen to light a candle but mistook the cat's glowing eyes for live coals. He tried to light a match, and the cat scratched his face. The robber yelped and ran to the back door, where the hound bit his leg. As he stumbled across the yard, the donkey kicked him, and the rooster crowed from the roof.

The robber ran back to his captain, more terrified than ever. "Boss, it's a madhouse in there! There's a witch with glowing eyes, a man with a knife, a black monster, and some kind of judge up on the roof. We’re outnumbered and outclassed!"

The robbers never dared to return to the house, and the four animals lived happily ever after, making music and enjoying their newfound freedom. They might not have made it to Bremen, but they found a place to call their own, proving that sometimes, the journey itself is the adventure.

In a field with corn so wide,
A donkey worked with tired stride.
Years of toil made him so weary,
His master’s plans, oh so dreary!

“I’ll go to Bremen,” he thought with glee,
“To play music and be carefree!”
On the road, a panting hound,
Whispered sadly, “No home I’ve found.”

“Join me, friend, on this trail,
We’ll make music, we cannot fail!”
Together they trotted, spirits high,
Underneath the wide blue sky.

A cat they met, with whiskers long,
No longer spry, but once was strong.
“Come with us, your paws will tap,
In Bremen, you’ll wear a musician's cap!”

On they went, their trio set,
Until a rooster’s cry they met.
“Why crow so loud?” Donkey did ask,
“Tomorrow’s soup, my final task.”

“Join our band, your voice so grand!”
And so they marched, a merry band.
To a cottage, their journey led,
A robber’s feast, and unmade bed.

With a plan so bold and brave,
Donkey, hound, cat, and rooster gave,
A mighty scare with a cacophony loud,
Scared the robbers, an unruly crowd.

They feasted well and found their beds,
Different spots to lay their heads.
When robbers returned, a fright they got,
From glowing eyes and a bark so hot!

They fled for good, left peace behind,
In that cottage, four friends you’d find.
Living happily, their days were spent,
In joyful music, they were content.
